I am utterly delighted to announce the release of my first game. Quadrathlon is now available to preorder on the App Store for the whopping price of 99p. It is an ad-free, Olympic-sized word game covering four events in the ultimate test of verbal velocity.
It is weird to think that this path only began six months ago. I read an article about how people were utilising AI to learn to code apps and thought I would like to give it a go. It has been a hell of a ride, and I have thoroughly enjoyed it.
Quadrathlon came about due to a repeated question from my Mother. When I told her that I was learning to make iPhone games, she asked me the same question again and again: “When are you going to make a game I can play?”
You see, my Mum, currently approaching her 70th birthday, is an avid gamer. On her phone, on her iPad, on her laptop, and on her Nintendo Switch. She has a morning routine whereby she plays crosswords and Wordle, exercising her brain before the day depletes her.
The challenge became: How can you design a word game that is a daily challenge, long enough to be taxing, but short enough to satisfy the modern attention span?
After a few different experiments, I had an idea to find four different types of word games that each focus on an individual cognitive function—and then add time pressure. I settled on 100 seconds per game, as it feels long enough to get into the flow but short enough to feel the pressure. From there, it became a case of expanding on the concept.
Fast forward to now: I have a complete game, and I am stupidly excited. Regardless of what happens next, it feels like a tremendous achievement to have tried something so far out of my comfort zone at this stage of my life and finished with a tangible result.
So, thank you, Mum, for the challenge. I hope you enjoy playing the game as much as I have enjoyed making it.
Quadrathlon will be released on my Mum’s 70th birthday, December 15th.
